- Course objectives
- The aim of this course is to demonstrate the variety of sources of scientific information in zoology, to show how to find specific information needed and how to work with it.
- Learning outcomes
- At the end of this course students should be able to:
- formulate a querry and to find bibliographic references on any scientific topic effectively;
- find the original sources of any scientific information (e.g. papers in scientific journals, books in libraries) based on bibliographic data effectively
- cite the sources of this information correctly in their own bachelor/diploma theses and publications;
- check the validity of any scientific names of animal taxa;
- set up a simple database of literature on the topic of their own interest. - Syllabus
- 1) Types of sources of scientific information and styles of their citation.
- 2) Taxonomic sources 1 – types of taxonomic publications, primary taxonomic literature (species descriptions, revisions, monographs), publications for identifications of animals (handbooks, identification keys, elektronic applications).
- 3) Taxonomic sources 2 – sources for nomenclature and classification, catalogues and check-lists.
- 4) Search of literature in electronic databases, public internet search engines, formulation of a querry, types of electronic databases, electronic resources available at Masaryk university.
- 5) Web of Science and Journal of Citation Report databases, citation indices, Scopus database.
- 6) Search of full-texts of scientific papers.
- 7) Scientific journals: examples of prestigeous, specialised and popular journals in zoology, standard editorial process in a scientific journal, journal abbreviations in bibliographic citations.
- 8) Traditional libraries, search of books in librarian catalogues, e-book collections, electronic depositories.
- 9) Organization of literature, applications for citation and management of bibliographic references.
- 10) Scientific societies, meetings and social networks.

- Teaching methods
- Presentations demonstrating general guidelines and specific examples by the lecturer in the lessons, followed by homeworks during which students work individually. Visit of the library of the Department of Botany and Zoology (Faculty of Science, Masaryk University).
- Assessment methods
- Students have to fulfill 10 homeworks which are specified after each lesson. At the end of the semester, these homeworks are integrated into a final individual project report of each student and checked by the lecturer. To pass the course, students have to finish 100% of the homeworks correctly. It is compulsory to attend the lectures.
