Course objectives
The lectures about selected methods of mineralogical and petrologic-optical study including universal Fjodorov stage will be given in that course. The wide range of mineralogical and petrografical characteristics can be determined by means of common polarizing microscope, but special modifications of polarizing microscope or special instruments are used for exact determination of some important optical parameters (refraction indices, birefringence, angle of optical axes, character of twinning laws, position of optical axis, etc.)
Syllabus
  • Determination of refractive index: method of oblique illumination, method of phase contrast, refractometry
  • Interference methods
  • Usage of four-axis U-stage
  • Usage of five-axis U-stage, its advantages
  • Graphical presentation of measurement results, work with Vulff net
  • Isotropic minerals, checking the isotropy, angles between morphological elements of isotropic minerals
  • Discrimination between uniaxial and biaxial anisotropic minerals, position of optical anisotropy, the character of uniaxial minerals
  • The position of optical indicatrix of biaxial minerals, the character and magnitude of 2V angle (methods of measurement on four- and five-axis stage)
  • Pleochroism, absorption, refractive index, dispersion, birefringence, retardation, thickness of thin section, measurement of birefringence
  • Angles between morphological and optical elements, twinning laws, use in selected mineral groups (quartz, pyroxenes, amphiboles, olivine, epidote)
  • Feldspars (alkaline feldspars, plagioclases, basicity of plagioclases - zonal and classical method, twinning laws in plagioclase, high- and low-temperature plagioclases)
  • Principles of structural petrology - measurement of the orientation of uniaxial minerals, measurement of the orientation of biaxial minerals, contour diagrams

Assessment methods (in Czech)
Praktická cvičení. Na základě návodů učitele, zhodnotí posluchači během kurzu optické charakteristiky vybraných minerálních skupin. Kurz je ukončen předložením požadovaných 10 písemných protokolů z jednotlivých cvičení.
Language of instruction
