Course objectives
The aim of the subject is to explain the relationships between the morphology of natural streams and rivers and fluvial processes which shape them. The changes of river channel morphology in space (downstream) and time are elucidated, relations between controling variables (hydrology, geology) and development of rivers. The ways in which geomorphological knowledge is applied in the river management are presented.
Main objectives can be summarized as follows:
to learn the variabilty of stream and river channel forms
to understand the principles of river hydraulics and fluvial processes
to learn the techniques of hydromorphological and ecomorphological assessment of rivers
to analyze the human impact on the rivers
Syllabus
  • 1. Fluvial geomorphology: principal terms and concepts, 2. River basin hydrology: surface runoff, hydrological extremes, precipitation-runoff relations, 3. Channel network: quantitative analysis, origination of erosional channel, evolution of the channel network, 4. Fluvial processes: streamflow in the channel, erosion, transport and deposition of sediment, 5. Channel morphology: channel bed microforms, cross-profile, longitudinal profile, 6. Channel pattern: straight, meandering, braided nad anastomosed channels, 7. Channel changes: causes of the change, dominant discharge, hydraulic geometry, 8. Ecological assessment of rivers: mapping and classification of river channels, 9. Fluvial sediments: stratigraphy and palaeohydrology, 10. Rivers and tectonics: active and passive tectonic control, role of the global tectonics, 11. Man and the river: water extraction, channel regulation, river basin management.

Teaching methods
The basis of the course are lectures devoted to various topics of fluvial geomorphology. Students prepare a powerpoint presentation from scientific paper for seminar, the discussion follows. Students writte an essay (they can choose from three to four offered topics). The last activity is a half day field project (mapping the fluvial forms, calculating Q from channel measurements, etc.), final report is the output of the field project.
Assessment methods
Presumption for granting the credit is the essay writting on chosen topic and compilation of the final report from the field project (jointly). Examination has an oral form.
