- Course objectives
- Lecture is focused on protection of endangered animal species in Czech Republic and from global point of view (particularly CITES). The information about causes of extinction and vulnerability of animal species, conservation and legislative measures for their protection are presented. Biology of respective endangered species is described in relation to their biotopes, including specific examples and methods practiced in Czech Republic.
- Syllabus
- Endangered species and their biology. Endangered biotopes in CR and related animals. Particular examples of animal vulnerability in conditions of CR. Causes if extinction, vulnerability and restoration of populations. Examples of threatened species in CR, Specific methods of species protection: management, action plans for species, breeding in captivity and reintroduction, (examples of successful and unsuccessful programmes in CR and abroad – beaver, pearl mussel, grouse, bustard, crayfish, bats, sturgeons, monkeys, turtles, parrots, crocodiles, snakes etc.). Role of biotopes for conservation of viable populations, Examples of impact of invasive species, Oscillations of distribution area, Czech and international legislative related to endangered species, Tools for species protection and practical examples of their implementation, Examples of “umbrella species” in relation to habitat management, Practical experience in species protection in CR (Agency of nature and landscape protection CR, Czech environmental inspections, rescue centers etc.), CITES – overview of species, their biology and problems related to protection. Illegal trade, smuggling, breeding, ZOO. Protection of animals in worldwide scale. Examples of genetic fund management for conservation purposes. Social and political consequences. Impact of legislative and public relations on animal conservation.
