Course objectives
This course is aimed at elucidation of genetic and molecular aspects of the basic principles of Angiosperm, such as reproduction, sex determination, incompatibility, male sterility, polyploidy, mutations, disease resistance, wide hybridization, plant biotechnology and transgenosis, molecular markers. Completion of this course will ensure that the student obtains knowledge on fundamental genetic and molecular principles of basic plant processes.
Syllabus
  • 1. Reproduction of plants and its genetic consequences. 2. Genetic resources, origin of cultivated species, evolution of plant genomes. 3. Interspecific and intergeneric hybridization - application in plant breeding. 4. Sex determination in plants. 5. Incompatibility systems in plants. 6. Genetic determination of male sterility and its significance in plant breeding. 7. Euploidy and aneuploidy, occurrence in wild and cultivated plants. 8. Induced mutations in plants. 9. Heterosis. 10. Genetics of disease resistance in plants. 11. Plant biotechnology. 12. Transgenosis in plants and its practical application (GMO). 13. Molecular markers. 14. Arabidopsis thaliana and other plant model organisms.
