- Course objectives
- History of Sciences is part of a complex study of the sciences. A better understanding of the historical development of science, its function, possibilities and consequences is the main aim of this study. The organization of history of botany lectures corresponds with that commonly used in history of art and culture lectures. The historical background of technical, cultural or political developments is accented in individual stages. The history of botany in Bohemia and Moravia is also noted in accordance with the regional aspects of botany.
- Syllabus
- Basic terms, paradigm theory. Botany in Sumer and Assyria. Habitual classification of plants: Theophrastus. Prototyp of medieval herbal books: Dioscorides. Herbal poems of medieval monks: O. v. Meung, Hildegarde v. Bingen, Albertus Magnus. Origin of botany in Renaissance - herbal books: Brunfels, Bock, Fuchs, Tabernaemontanus, Dodonaeus, Lobelius, etc. First regional floras Thal, Clusius, morphological classification: A. Cesalpino, G. Bauhin. Plant sexuality: R. J. Camerarius, A. Zálužanský. Plant morphology, physiology and anatomy: J. Jung, C. F. Wolff, S. Hales, J. Ingenhousz, M. Malpighi, N. Grew. Origin of plant classification in the Enlightenment: from Morison to Linnaeus. Expeditions to exotic countries. 18th century: new institutions - scientific societies, scientific journals, museums, scientific congresses. 19th and 20th centuries: development of microscopic techniques and methods (development of cryptogamous plant classification, knowledge of plant fertilization, cytology, karyology); interdisplinary science (phytogeography); historical aspect in botany (paleobotany, evolutionary classification), measurement and quantitative aspects (biostatistics), synthetic aspects (plant taxonomy, plant ecology, biosystematics). History of floristic research in Bohemia and Moravia (from Bohadsch, Schmidt, Pohl to Domin, Dostál and Květena České republiky)
