- Course objectives
- The purpose of the course is to practise inorganic nomenclature and basic chemical calculations. Selected topics from the course C1601 are explained in more detail and practised.
- Learning outcomes
- At the end of this course, students should be able to name common inorganic compounds. They should understand and use stoichiometric calculations from balanced equations, different types of solution concentrations and relations between them, preparation of solutions, and calculations related to strong and weak acids and bases pH and solubility.
- Syllabus
- Nomenclature of inorganic compounds.
- Stoichiometric calculations from balanced equations.
- Solution concentrations and relations between them.
- Strong and weak acids and bases, pH. Buffers.
- Electronic structure of atoms, periodic trends.
- Chemical bonding. Lewis structures and VSEPR model.
- Isomers. Chirality and enantiomers. NMR spectroscopy.
- Ideal gas laws. Crystalline solids. Phase equilibria.
- Mixtures. Solubility of compounds and electrolytic dissociation.
- Chemical equilibria, Le Chatelier principle. Thermochemistry.
- Electrochemistry. Standard reduction potentials. Electrolysis.
