- Course objectives
- Aim of the course is to teach how to recognise the most important types of clastic, biogenous and chemogenous rocks, their composition, fabrics, as well as their depositional mechanisms and environments. Special attention will be paid to carbonate deposits and to understanding of carbonate depositional systems. Students will work with thin-sections in laboratory of optical microscopy during practices and they will acquire methods of microfacies analysis. Describing of sedimentary successions will be a part of the field-work practice.
- Learning outcomes
- Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- determine macroscopically a type of sedimentary rock and to describe its texture;
- recognise the main types of sedimentary structures and their significance for interpretation of sediment origin;
- classify carbonate rocks using the conventional Dunham classification based on thin-sections observation;
- recognise main components and microfacies of carbonate rocks in thin-sections;
- apply the gained knowledge of microfacies analysis to carbonate rocks research; - Syllabus
