- Course objectives
- The objective of the course is to deepen and to enlarge geographical knowledge of Asia. Physical geography of the continent is a key prerequisite for understanding links between natural resources and economy. At the same time it helps to understand natural hazards. Human geography part of the course is aimed at interpretation of demographic processes, urbanization, economic transformation and political issues which are under way in contemporary Asia. The topic is approached through geographical lenses, with an objetive to contribute to understanding of regional differences within the continent, as well within some of its most importatnt states/regions: China, Japan, Korea, India, and South-East Asia.
- Learning outcomes
- After passing out the course, students will be able:
- to understand interrelations between environment and processes of economic and political development in Asia;
- to explain differences in demographic development of particular states and regions of Asia;
- to understand natural hazards in regions of Asia;
- to discuss selected issues of social, economic and political development in some states and regions of Asia: China, Japan, Korea, India, South-East Asia;
- to discuss internal regional structure of these regions (regionalisation);
- to present and discuss selected geographical topic from contemporary Asia; - to orientate herself/himself on the map of Asia. - Syllabus

- Geographic location and delimitation. Geological development and tectonic structure.
- The relief and typology of landscapes.
- The climate, climatic zones and climatic regions
- Hydrology: lakes and rivers, hydrological regimes, glaciers, permafrost, ground water, swamps.
- Oceans and seas.
- Soils: geography of soil types. Pedogeographic regions.
- Biogeography: vegetation zones and levels. Forests. Biogeographic regions.
- Complex physical-geographical regions. Protection of environment.
- Human geography of Asia
- Population: population structure and demographic processes. Language and religion.
- Urbanization and settlements.
- Natural resources.
- Economy: Asia in the world economy, economic development and structure of economy, regional economic specialization, economic reforms and their consequences.
- China: population, culture, economy, internal regional structure (regionalisation).
- India: population, culture, economy, regions.
- Japan and Korea: population, culture, economy, regions.
- Southeast Asia: population, culture, economy, regional cooperation.

- Teaching methods
- The course is based on lectures and seminars. Seminars are based either on students presentations or group discussions concerning important social, political or economic themes in the region.
- Assessment methods
- To pass out the students should prepare a seminar paper and present it in a seminar. Active participation in discussion seminars is also expected.
The written examination consists of two parts, one concerning physical geography of the continent, the other concerning human geography. - Language of instruction
