Students interested in the subject must be able to handle common computer tasks and be interested in maps and geography.
Students can work on their computers or computers in university study rooms or terminal servers. If they are working on their computers, they should install a university license in ArcGIS Pro. More information about the ArcGIS Pro university license: https://it.muni.cz/sluzby/software/esri-arcgis. ArcGIS Pro is installed in university classrooms and terminal servers.
It is also possible to work in another GIS program if the student is used to it. If he complies with all the rules while completing the assignment, his exercises will be accepted. - Course Enrolment Limitations
- The course is also offered to the students of the fields other than those the course is directly associated with.

- Course objectives
- The goal of the subject is to introduce students of programs other than geography and cartography to the topic of geographic information systems (GIS) and their possible use in different fields - including student's fields of study.
- Learning outcomes
- After completing the course, students will understand the environment of GIS programs. They will be able to perform the most common tasks in them - perform fundamental spatial analyses and create basic types of maps. In addition to the general map of the chosen one, they will learn to create statistical maps and three-dimensional visualizations using digital terrain models. In addition to creating maps and visualizations, students will also learn the basics of GIS analysis. Familiarity with existing freely available data sources will also be included.
- Syllabus
- Choosing of area of interest.

- Teaching methods
- The course is prepared in the form of e-learning (interactive curriculum). This is based on practical exercises in the taught software based on real tasks. The interactive curriculum also includes short presentations on the topic currently being discussed. During the semester, students will prepare and submit individual exercises.
The main GIS program used is ArcGIS Pro, whose license every student of Masaryk University can install on their computer. More information: https://it.muni.cz/sluzby/software/esri-arcgis. However, it is possible to use another GIS program according to the student's choice. If he complies with all the rules, his exercises will be accepted.
If part of the e-learning materials is unclear, or if some other problem occurs, students can ask the teacher for a personal consultation and explanation of the subject matter at any time. - Assessment methods
- At the end of the semester, one joint meeting will be held on an online platform. In the form of a colloquium, students will present their outputs (maps and visualizations) created during the semester in front of the teacher and other students. Students will then complete an online form to provide feedback on the completed course.
The conditions for obtaining credit are the successful submission of all exercises, the presentation of your results at the final meeting, and the submission of feedback on the subject. - Language of instruction
