Course objectives
The lecture demonstrates reactivity and properties of macrocylic compounds and is accompanied by examples taken from literature or from experimental experiences of lecturer. In addition, the potential aplication of macrocyclic complexes in practice is mentioned.
Syllabus
  • 1. Introduction into macrocylic chemistry (nomenclature, natural macrocyles, importance).
  • 2. Types of macrocylic ligands and their complexes, cyclic polyamines and porphyrines, cyclic cyclic polyethers (crowns, polyethers, cryptands, cavitands, calixarens), cyclic ligands with other donor atoms than O or N, polycore a polymer macrocycles, catenans and catenands, macrocyclic sugars, robust macrocycles (sepulchurates), stereoisomerism of macrocycles, "hole-size" concept.
  • 3. Aspects of macrocycle synthesis. Free ligands - non-template synthesis, reaction of ring formation (synthesis under high and low dilution).
  • 4. Complexes - non-template synthesis, template synthesis (influence of physical and chemical conditions on kind and yield of reaction - kinds of template effects), in situ reactions. Derivatization of macrocycles - introduction of functional groups into cyclic skeleton and protection of cyklic skeleton.
  • 5. Chelate and macrocyclic effect - origin and quantification. Experimental techniques suitable for study of reactivity of macrocyklic compounds.
  • 6. Thermodynamic aspect - selectivity for ions. Kinetic aspect - formation and dissociation kinetics.
  • 7. Reactivity of complexes and their redox properties. Stabilisation of less common oxidation states - "metal-centred", "ligand-centred" oxidation and reduction. Substitution reactions in axial site, reaction of coordinated macrocyclic ligand, demetallic reactions and ionic exchange reactions.
  • 8. Macrocyclic systems. Complexation of metal ions (cyclic polyethers, polyamines a polyimins; cryptands, calixarenes, etc.).
  • 9. "Host-guest" chemistry - complexation of organic cations.
  • 10. Complexation of organic anions.
  • 11. Complexation of neutral compounds cyclodextrines.
  • 12. The use of macrocyclic ligands and their complexes in chemistry, biology, medicine - examples.
