Course objectives
In the laboratory course in nuclear chemistry students get acquainted with some basic methods of detection and measurement of ionizing radiation, handling of sources of ionizing radiation, properties of ionizing radiation, separation and characterization of selected radionuclides, and activation analysis.
Syllabus
  • 1. Radiation safety and principles of radiation protection. 2. Errors in measurement of radioactivity. 3. Scintilation probe dead time. 4. Crystal scintillation probe. 5. Gamma spectroscopy with crystal probe. 6. Absorption of gamma and beta radiation. 7. Self-absorption of beta radiation. 8. Determination of the half-life of a short-lived radionuclide. 9. Determination of the half-life of a long-lived radionuclide. 10. Determination of degree of enrichment of uranium compounds. 11. Radioactive equilibrium. 12. Measurements of volume activity of radon. 13. Alfa spectroscopy. 14. Measurements of low-energy beta radiation by metods of liquid scintilation.
