Syllabus
  • Principles of radioactivity. Radioactivity and the environment. Radioactive series, radon and its daughter products. Effects of ionizing radiation on man, risk of radon and its decay products, contemporary problems of epidemiological studies. Sources of radon (geological underlier, building materials, water, air). Natural radioactivity of rocks and basic geochemical characteristics of uranium and thorium. Uranium and thorium in magmatic and hypergenous processes. Radioactivity of rocks of the Czech Massif and Western Carpathians. Changes in rocks and in their radioactivity, radioactivity and the age of rocks, radioactivity and the deep structural levels of the Czech Massif. Determination of the level of the basement penetration. Measurement of the natural radioactivity, aim of the measurement, principles of measurement methods. Determination of radon and its daughter products in air. Measurement of gamma dose equivalent. Determination of radioactivity of building materials. Determination of radon concentration in water. Determination of radon risk of the geological underlier. Devices for measurement of radon, licensing of measurement methods. Practical illustration of devices and demonstration of most usual methods for measurement of radon. Determination of natural radioactivity of rocks.
