Course objectives
The aim of this course is to introduce the non-experimental aspects of environmental chemistry to the students, especially the tools for chemical environmental data interpretation and the basics of PC modeling. The course is focused on both the explanation of current scientific knowledge in the field and presentation of practical aspects of the introduced tools.
Syllabus
  • 1. Information sources and models
  • a. Introduction into environmental modeling and GIS (Geographical Information Systems)
  • b. Information and environmental data sources suitable for modeling, databases
  • 2. Receptor modeling, source apportionment of pollutants: introduction, principles, application, examples (air mass trajectory statistics, multivariatiate statistical methods)
  • 3. Dispersion modeling: introduction, principles, application, example (e.g. SYMOS´97)
  • 4. Spatial modeling I – sampling design, autocorrelation
  • 5. Spatial modeling II – basic interpolation techniques for spatial modeling of pollutant distributions, exercises in ArcGIS
  • 6. Introduction to box models, mathematical solutions, transportation processes and distribution coefficients
  • 7. Examples of box models, their basic principles, structure and mathematical solutions (e.g. EPISuit, Chemcan, CemoS, POPCYCLING-Baltic) + exercises in MS Excel

Teaching methods
Education is performed as lectures with PowerPoint presentation and class discussion. Each lecture block will be supplemeted with practical lesson on PC where different approaches will be tested on various SW. Real examples from environmental chemistry will be presented during these lectures. Students are asked to interpret results of practical examples. Students develop a projecst on a selected topic during the semester.
Assessment methods
Final assesment (at the end of semester) is combination of written examination and project evaluation.
