- Course objectives
- The aim of the course is an introduction into the system of drug research and development highlighting the role of organic chemists in this system. Students will be acquainted with a modern approach to solution of various problems of drug R&D and transfer its results into production, in particular by way of examples of anticancer medicines.
- Syllabus
- Importance of chemotherapeutics, brief history of pharmacotherapy, drug policy. Introduction to pharmacology: basic terms, drug targets, pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics. Organization of drug research and development. Drug discovery. Combinatorial synthesis and high throughput screening. Drug design. Lead structure and pharmacophore, stereochemical aspects, quantitative structure-activity relationships. Drug development. Polymorphism. Manufacturing processes for active pharmaceutical ingredients. Good manufacturing practice. Process validation and documentation. Drug delivery. Drug forms and bioavailability. Active ingredients and excipients. Pharmaceutical technology. Drug stability, specification and procedures for quality control. Preclinical testing, clinical trials, drug registration and marketing approval. Intellectual property protection. Patents, patenting, search for patent documents. International anatomical-therapeutical-chemical drug classification. Drug information resources. Anticancers as example of an ATC drug class. Causes of cancer, cancer chemotherapy, mechanism of anticancer drug action. Conventional and targeted anticancer medicines. Perspectives of cancer therapy. Examples of generic drug development An excursion to a pharmaceutical company – if possible

- The course consists of several lectures and is closed by a written examination. Students are challenged with 12 questions reflecting various aspects of pharmacochemistry. Each answer is scored, maximum score is 10 points. Total number of points must be at least 46 to pass the examination.
