- Course objectives
- At the end of the course students should be able: -to understand the fundamentals of chronostratigraphic subdivision of Pleistocene and Holocene and the basic dating methods of Quaternary rocks -to understand the principles of Quaternary palaeoclimatology -to explain the extraterrestrial steering factors of climate changes (Milankovitch theory) -to represent the main types of Quaternary depositional environments and explain the principles of their stratigraphic evolution with relation to the climate changes
- Syllabus
- Quaternary: definition, chronostratigraphic location and subdivision
- Glacials and integlacials: definition, history, chronostratigraphic significance, overview in Europe and North America
- Record of climatic changes in the environment: glacieustatic fluctuation, continental ice cover, oceans and delta O18 isotopic ratio, palynology, CO2
- Milankovitch theory: eccentricity, Earth axis tilt and precesion - basic charactersitics, periodicities, insolation and climatic significance
- Methods of dating of Quaternary rocks: radiocarbon method, dendrochronology, paleomagnetism, tephrostratigraphy, aminoacid dating, lichenometry, weatheting and pedogenesis, etc.
- Quaternary depositional environments: glacial, eolic + loess, lacustrine, fluvial, karst, slope processes, etc.
