Course objectives
Aim of the course is understanding of gem properties and origin, and ability to use the knowledge of gems in everyday life.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course, students will:
  • • understand the main gemstones and their properties;
  • • understand and explain basics of gemstone mining, processing, and economics;
  • • know the types of gem deposits and broader social-economic-environmental implications related to their mining;
  • • will be able to assess information available to customers on gemstone market.
  • Syllabus
    • History of gemstones, famous jewels, gemstone market.
    • Introduction to mineralogy of gemstones, basic terms.
    • Gemstone deposits and their exploration.
    • The nature of color and light.
    • Diamonds and colored gems (corundum, beryl, tourmaline, topaz, spodumene, jade, garnet, olivine, tektites, and others)
    • Mining of gems and its implications.
