Course objectives
The main aim of the course is to provide students with basic knowledge of: basic groups of microorganisms - viruses, bacteria (including cyanobacteria), Archaea, Fungi; structure and function of virion; the structure and function of prokaryotic cells; differences in cyanobacterial and archaeal cell constructions; eukaryotic microorganisms; growth and multiplication of microorganisms; nutrition of microorganisms; energy metabolism of chemothophs and chemolitothrops; phototrophic microorganisms; fundamentals of genetics and molecular biology of microorganisms; microbial communities; the importance of microorganisms in the environment; industrial use of microorganisms; the most important taxonomic groups of bacteria, archaea and fungi; microorganisms as agents of infectious diseases.
Learning outcomes
At the end this course, students should be able to: ;
- understand and explain dissimilarity between prokaryotic and eukaryotic microorganisms ;
- comprehend relationship among microorganisms ;
- elucidate relation amongst microorganisms and environment ;
- document contribution of microorganisms to environmental changes ;
- illustrate use of microorganisms in biotechnology
