- Course objectives
- The aim of the subject is to introduce the students to the field of theory of education. The subject deals with the general rules applied in instruction in the areas such as curriculum (dealing with subject matter), methods and forms of teaching, evaluation of instruction, the instruments in instruction, the agents of instruction, lesson planning, requirements on teachers, etc.
- Learning outcomes
- At the end of this course students will be able to apply theoretical knowledge from General didactics in the teaching practice at secondary school. Students will acquire basics for their future professional skills as well as for research and theoretical activities in the field of General didactics. Students will be able to implement the principles and methods of modern didactics and psychodidactics into the educational environment of their future workplace. Students will be able to describe the theoretical basis of General didactics as a scientific discipline; they will be able to define the following terms: education, curriculum, subject matter, key competences, pedagogical evaluation and diagnostics, educational and teaching goals etc.; they will be able to distinguish individual forms and methods of teaching (including the elements of reform or alternative didactics) and choose an appropriate form or method depending on the situation. They will also be able to apply the methods of objective pupil evaluation, classify didactic means and evaluate their suitability in teaching; students will be able to evaluate textbooks (and other teaching materials) by means of didactic analysis, describe the significance of self-reflection and apply the principle in own teaching practice, create own lesson plans; they will be aware of didactic principles and know basic literature on General didactics.

- 1. Didactics
- Origin, development, contemporary definition of the concept. Psycho didactics.
- 2. Education Educational process, contents, result and effects.
- 3. Teacher and student of secondary school Personal and qualification requirements laid on the performance of educational profession. Secondary school student. Teacher-student relationship, school climate and class-room climate.
- 4. Teaching process and its forms Transmissive, constructive models of teaching. Educational targets. Effective learning. Alternative methods of education.
- 5. Content area Structure, textbooks, learning objectives.
- 6. Organizational forms, organization of teaching process, aspects of up-to-date teaching, teaching unit, motivation factors.
- 7. Teaching methods Classification of the methods, their application to practice. Activizing teaching methods.
- 8. Didactic principles Kinds, methods of their implementation in the educational process.
- 9. Didactic means in the teaching process – teaching aids, didactic technical means.

- 11. Assessment of the achieved results of students’ education Kinds, methods, principles, means. Didactic (knowledge based) tests.

- Teaching methods
- Lectures are focused on the interpretation of terms and introduction of the theory of General didactics (presentation, audio, video, teaching aids demonstrations etc. are involved), discussions are included. In the seminars students perform "microteaching". They also submit an assignment on a given theoretical topic. Selected topics will be the basis for discussions on seminars. 100% attendance is required.
- Assessment methods
- The methods of evaluation: written test, oral exam, presentation (microteaching), written assignment. The test consists of 20-30 items (open and closed), passmark is 75%. The student will be asked an additional question in the oral exam.
