Course objectives
This course is primarily for students of biology, biochemistry, anthropology and students from the RECETOX centre. The objective of this course is to familiarize students with topics that are related to their field of study. Students will work with scientific topics to improve their grammar, enhance their vocabulary and writing skills to be able to communicate in academia. The course is focused on communication skills (discussion, paraphrasing, presentations), on writing skills (academic email, summary), listening skills (videos and podcasts on scientific topics) and reading skills (articles related to science).
Learning outcomes
At the end of this course, students will be able to: - to use and put into context scientific vocabulary; - to understand a popular science/scientific text; - to identify important information in a scientific text; - to summarize a scientific text; - to be able to use language functions: defining, description of a process, explaining a cause and effect relationship, classifying, and comparing and contrasting; - to prepare a poster presentation; - to understand a lecture and take notes; - to discuss general and scientific topics related to biology or biochemistry - to apply selected grammar phenomena in a scientific context

Teaching methods
Pair and group work (discussions, mini talks, paraphrasing) and project work (poster presentation); weekly assignments (short oral summaries of a video/article on a selected topic); games and quizzes to practise grammar and vocabulary.
Assessment methods
1. Completing in-term tasks: - presenting in a team - writing an academic email - summarising a source 2. mock test 3. 80% attendance 4. active preparation for classes (completing short weekly assignments)
