Course objectives
At the end of the course the students will get an overview of molecular mechanisms in early and late embryonic development and also of biomedical application of the recent knowledge. Education alignment is drawn in the frame of other disciplines, thus contributing to a superior knowledge network for further education and experience in the field of molecular biology.
Learning outcomes
Students will be able to: - explain molecular mechanisms in early and late embryonic development - associate evolutionary and ecological relationships with developmental biology - summarize recent knowledge of developmental biology associated with biomedical applications

  • 1) Experimental models in developmental and experimental biology 2) Molecular methods for studies of embryonal development 3) Principals of molecular signaling during embryogenesis: cell-cell interactions 4) Key signaling pathways in development: SHH, FGF 5) Key signaling pathways in development: WNT, TGF 6) Homeobox genes in embryonal development 7) Role of senescence in development 8) Regulation of cell migration and EMT in embryogenesis 9) Metamorphosis 10) Evolutionary aspects of embryology (EVO-DEVO) 11) Ecological developmental biology 12) Medical applications using stem cells and approaches of experimental embryology 13) New findings in molecular embryology

Teaching methods
Teaching is based on lectures and discussions on questions of developmental biology in small groups or class discussions.
Assessment methods
Written test will be used to evaluate the knowledge obtained in this course. At least 60% of correct answers to 30 test questions are required to pass the exam.
