- Course objectives
- The aim of the course is to get the students know about the phenomenon of paleokarst, its theoretical and terminological fundament. Practical examples of paleokarst studies during the base geological mapping are presented. The use of field and laboratory methods for the study of paleokarst is submitted.
- Learning outcomes
- At the end of the course, student will understandn:
1. definition of basic terms: karst period, karst phase, karst event;
2. basic characteristics of the paleokarst phenomena, its use in ore and non-ore deposits geology (bauxite, hydrocarbons tec.);
3. main paleokarst phenomena of the limestone areas of Moravia;
4. basic methods of absolute and relative dating of paleokarst and caves;
5. methods of prove and definition of paleokarst phenomena. - Syllabus
- Practical part:
- 1. Devonian limestones of Moravia, what can be seen from their paleokarst history;
- 2. Scenario of the Middle Devonian paleokarst development;
- 3. The possibilities of field geological documentation of karst phenomena;
- 4. Bauxites of Montenegro, genesis, importance for the economics of the country;
- 5. Project of the subtrranean hydropowerstation Ombla by Dubrovnik, Croatia;
- 6. Geology and deep verticals: case study from the Maganik Mts., Montenegro;

- Teaching methods
- The teaching method is a combination of powerpoint presentations based on own results and on compilation of literature from last years and decades. A part of presentation is in Englisch accompanied by czech description and vice versa. Students are asked to solve some simple tasks during lessons and final colloquium. All presentations are consequently put on the internet pages of the seminar.
- Assessment methods
- The assessment means a combination of presence (more than 75% is usual) and of results of the final written test or answers during the final colloquium.
- Language of instruction
- Czech
- Further comments (probably available only in Czech)
- The course can also be completed outside the examination period.
The course is taught once in two years.
Information on the per-term frequency of the course: Bude otevřeno v jarním semestru 2024/2025.
The course is taught: in blocks.
