- Course objectives
- This course is primarily for students of chemical and biochemical disciplines. The objective of this course is to familiarize students with topics that are related to their field of study. Students will work with scientific topics to improve their grammar, enhance their vocabulary and writing skills to be able to communicate in academia. The course is focused on communication skills (discussion, paraphrasing, presentations), on writing skills (academic email, summary), listening skills (videos and podcasts on scientific topics) and reading skills (articles related to science).
- Learning outcomes
- Learners are able to: use and put into context scientific vocabulary; understand a scientific text; identify important information in a scientific text; to summarize a scientific text; use language functions: defining, description of a process, explaining a cause and effect relationship; prepare a presentation; understand a lecture; to discuss general and scientific topics related to chemistry or biochemistry; apply grammar in a scientific context; write a persuasive formal email.
- Syllabus
- Introducing conference skills
- Current Issues (eg. public health, ecology)
- Selecting sources for academic work
- Laboratory management & safety
- Dangerous Substances
- Writing a lab report
- Language functions (defining, cause & effect, process explanation, speculating) related to chemistry topics (e.g. acids and bases)
- Formal Email
- Poster Presentation
