- Course objectives
- The course objective is to deepen students' knowledge of academic English. This will be done through topics which are relevat to students' fields of study. In the course, students work with authentic scientific texts through which they will improve their vocabulary and grammar. The course gives an emphasis to communication skills which will be practised in discussions, talks, small group work / pair work and presentations. In the course, students will listen to and/or watch podcasts and videos with topics related to science. The course also aims at improving students' writing skills, namely writing an abstract to a scientific paper. Other genres of academic/scientific writing will be practised as well.
- Learning outcomes
- After the completion of the course, students will be able to: understand authentic scientific texts at B2 level of CEFR, understand spoken discourse concerning specialized topics at B2 level of CEFR, and communicate on an academic topic of interest. In presentation skills, students will become aware of the diversity of the needs of a specific audience in order to be able to adapt their presentations and mediate the insights into discipine-specific concepts. Besides, they will get experience with the role of the moderator of a student conference. In writing skills, they will be able to apply the academic principles of the given genres, namely the abstract and the essay.
