CEITEC – Central European Institute of Technology Masaryk University Kamenice 753/5, 625 00 Brno, Czech Republic www.ceitec.eu Dear members of the Scientific Board: I would like to inform you about two issues that have developed since the last meeting of the CEITEC MU Scientific Board on 14th March 2019. Consequently, I would like to ask you to make a statement and vote on the proposals below. 1. Amendment to the Strategic Plan of the Central European Institute of Technology at Masaryk University Preamble After 2020, CEITEC at Masaryk University will focus on life sciences, while maintaining its links to material science through membership in the consortium of the Central European Institute of Technology and its common activities, as further agreed. The institute will also strengthen its consolidation around research groups that are physically present at the University Campus in Bohunice. To foster this direction, an organisational change will be implemented effective as of 31st December 2020, in line with this amendment. Background to Proposal The amendment to the Strategic Plan responds to the expected financial gap at the end of the current sustainability period (approx. 30 mil CZK), which will require structural savings in order to endure long term viability of the institute. The proposal was deliberated upon at the Director’s Board on 18th June 2019 with no objections, and its consequences have also been discussed with CEITEC at Brno University of Technology (CEITEC BUT) and with the Faculty of Science at Masaryk University (Sci MUNI), with some provisions made by mutual agreement in respect to future arrangements. The relations with institutes at the Academy of Sciences will be dealt with separately under the current valid terms of the agreement. The Nomination of Prof. Josef Humlíček for the Silver Medal of Masaryk University Preamble The Silver Medal of MUNI is awarded to leading figures for their significant work, contribution to the reinforcement of the university's significance, cooperation with domestic and foreign institutions, and development of Masaryk University. The Director of CEITEC MU proposes Prof. Josef Humlíček for the Silver Medal of Masaryk University for his long-term contribution to the development of research at Masaryk University. Background to Proposal: Prof. Josef Humlíček has been working at Masaryk University since his studies. Since 1991, he has been the Head of the Department of Solid State Physics, and with the change in the structure at the Faculty of Science, he was the Head of the Institute of Condensed Matter Physics. He participated in the preparation of the CEITEC project and since 2011, he has been a Research Group Leader and Head of the Center of Nanoand Microtechnologies at CEITEC MU. CEITEC – Central European Institute of Technology Masaryk University Kamenice 753/5, 625 00 Brno, Czech Republic www.ceitec.eu Since the 1990’s, he has been focusing mainly on the research of nanostructures, which, thanks to him, have become one of the main topics of the Institute of Condensed Matter Physics, as well as the main focus of his research group at CEITEC MU. He is an expert in the field of ellipsometric measurement methodology and effective medium theories. He is the author and co-author of more than 120 peer-reviewed publications with almost 2,900 citations (according to WOS), and two utility models. As an expert in the field, he was invited to give lectures at universities in many cities (e.g., Linz, Aarhus, Copenhagen, Regensburg, Groningen, Houston, TU Wien, Fribourg, and KHU Seoul) and at outstanding international conferences (e.g., EPHTSC Kirchberg 1992, LEES2 Penalty 1995, AS-ASFPCNS, and Halle 1997). Prof. Josef Humlíček was elected as a Fellow of the Institute of Physics (Great Britain) in 2000 and as a member of the Learned Society of the Czech Republic in 2003. He was awarded by the Jan Marek Marci medal from Kronland and the Gold Medal of FSU VUT Brno. In addition to his scientific work, Prof. Josef Humlíček participates in the teaching and development of junior scientists. He is currently supervisor of two PhD students. Most of his graduates work in academic or commercial fields, and two of his graduates have already been appointed as associate professors. His pedagogical activities at Masaryk University include teaching courses such as Panorama of Physics, Optical Properties of Solids, Physics of Quantum Wells and Superlattices, Condensed Matter Physics, etc. Prof. Josef Humlíček actively contributes to the development of Masaryk University and CEITEC MU. He was a member of the Scientific Board of Masaryk University and the Scientific Board of the Faculty of Science for a long time. Moreover, he has been a member of expert committees such as GAČR and AV ČR on the national level, and a member of an expert panel at H2020 on the international level.
