Establishment of Gabriel Demo Research Group

Based on the opened international tender announced by the Rector of Masaryk University upon
the proposal of the Director of CEITEC MU in line with the Rules of the selection procedure for
academic positions at MU for the purpose of filling the position of the junior research group
leader, an unanimous proposal was submitted to appoint Mr. Gabriel Demo (CV and application
attached) to a the aforementioned position.
At the meeting between the Director of CEITEC MU and the candidate, an agreement was
achieved with respect to the factual terms and conditions of the candidate’s engagement. The
financial support is granted up to 2 mil. CZK yearly to cover personal costs, running costs, i.e.
consumables, travel costs, service, and equipment up to 40 K CZK incl. VAT per item. This
contribution may be partially or fully replaced by specific support from the central university funds.
Additional money may be released up to 5 mil. CZK as a refundable advanced financing, namely
for purchasing equipment that is not available at CEITEC in shared mode. This advanced
payment will be refundable against institutional budget provided research group will be awarded
any significant project in next 5 years.
Taking into consideration the research specialization of the selected candidate, it has been
proposed that the research group be established as a part of the Structural Biology Centre.
TIME ASPECT
Subject to advise of the Director´s Board and the Scientific Board, the decision will be finally
taken as planned effectively from 1 January 2020. New research group will be due for
evaluation as junior research groups by the CEITEC International Scientific Advisory Board in
2024.
SELECTION PROCEDURE
The call for junior research group leader position joined with hosting letter was announced on
13 June 2018 with the deadline for applications for 15 August 2018. Candidates were expected
either to be ERC Grant holder or those who present a strong proposal for ERC Grant to be
submitted under a hosting letter from CEITEC MU.
Shortlisted candidates were considered by the selecting by the Deputy Director for Research and
discussed with relevant Coordinators of Research Programmes.
Applicants: 13 applications received in term (0% female), 5 applicants shortlisted, 2 applicants
received the offer for submitting their ERC grant proposal under a hosting letter from CEITEC
MU.
Result: Gabriel Demo applied for a ERC-StG-2018 under a hosting letter from CEITEC MU.
Although the project was not finally funded, it was marked with grade A from the step 2 of the

ERC evaluation process, which makes him eligible for the ERC-CZ (national funding for 5 years)
as well as for application in MASH Award (MU - internal grant competition).
