Faculty of Economics and Administration
The Faculty of Economics and Administration
presently offers three kinds of
studies: Bachelor's, Master's and doctoral
degree programmes, in both on-site
and combined modes of study. In order
to perfectly reflect the dynamics of the
demands bestowed upon it by society,
the offer of education at the FEA is diversified
to a great extent. People interested
in studying at our faculty can do
so within a full-time study programme,
combined studies programme which is
based on direct lessons in blocks (usually
concentrated into five to seven seminars
per semester which take place during
weekends) combined with self-studying
enhanced by the use of the latest
information technologies and teaching
procedures. The last programme the FEA
offers is a life-long studies programme.
Within this programme, it is possible to
change to combined studies programme
after fulfilling certain criteria. More than
3,800 students in all study forms were
educated at the FEA in 2006.

2 STUDIES AT THE FEA
Studies at the Faculty of Economics and Administration
Seminars and lectures take place in the
faculty building, however, some programmes
are organised in the Masaryk University
Teaching Centre in Telč, too. This centre
has hosted students of the combined and
life-long Bachelor's studies programmes
since the academic year of 2003/2004. The
building of the Masaryk University Teaching
Centre in Telč was completely reconstructed
and furnished with modern information and
communication technologies

As the scope of our international cooperation
widens, we have established cooperation with
foreign institutions and successfully carried
out several interesting projects. First of all, we
should mention the project of Master's studies
in L` Administration publique (Public
administration), a field of study taught both in
Czech and French, and carried out within the
framework of ERASMUS/SOCRATES
exchange programme under the auspices of
the French Embassy in Prague. The field of
study is organized in cooperation with the
University of Rennes in France and focuses
on preparing highly qualified graduates for
careers in public administration. Students
have work placements and take special
courses in both Czech and French public
institutions
The Faculty of Economics and Administration
also cooperates with Academia Istropolitana
in Bratislava on a project of lifelong
education; the new contract from May 2005
made the activities of FEA in this field possible
in Slovakia, too, and simultaneously it enabled
their substantial expansion starting in the academic
year 2005/06. We also cooperate with
the University of Huddersfield, which enables
the students of Corporate economy to study
in Great Britain and obtain a BA (Hons.)
academic degree in European Business.
Special Education ProjectsSpecial Education Projects
At the beginning of 2006, Lidové Noviny,
one of the most popular newspapers in
the Czech Republic, in cooperation with
SC&C, presented results of a survey aimed
at assessing the quality of institutions
providing tertiary education. In the field
of economics, FEA MU ranked first
among 18 institutions.

Studies at the Faculty of Economics and Administration
Demand for studies at the Faculty of
Economics and Administration exceeds its
possibilities.
The Faculty of Economics and Administration
belongs among selective educational
institutions in the Czech Republic; as the
capacity of the FEA is limited, we annualy
turn down many applications of students
who wish to start studying at our faculty.
Modern conditions for education, science
and research are supported by computerisation;
our academics and students can take
advantage of more than 600 computers.
In the field of information technologies,
particular attention is paid to modern forms
of teaching such as electronic educational
instruments, electronic textbooks, autocorrection
tests etc. Hi-tech multimedia technologies
enable simultaneous education and
trasmission of the signal from the Masaryk
Teaching Centre in Telč.
In addition to that, the academic community
has a modern library with more than
45,000 titles and approximately 200 Czech
and foreign newspapers at its disposal. An

full-text databases, economic and corporate
information has an increasing importance.
The library also runs its own archive of
diploma theses which is accesible for the
public on the internet. The archive was the
first functional project of its kind in the Czech
Republic.

6 SCIENCE AND RESEARCH
Science and Research at the Faculty of Economics and Administration
Science and research at the Faculty of Economics
and Administration is conducted in
accordance with the basic orientation of its
departments and theoretical orientation of
its individual academic figures. The scientific
performance of the faculty has a great potential
which results in an increasing number
of project realizations. The FEA receives
scientific grants especially from Czech Grant
Agency, Czech Academy of Sciences Grant
Agency and various ministries of the Czech
government.
In 2005, the Faculty of Economics and
Administration acquired a significant and
extensive project of Research Centre for
Competitiveness of Czech Economy. This
project, which should be carried out for the
period of five years, was granted within the
framework of National research programme
`Research Centres' of the Czech Ministry of
Education. The project is carried out in
collaboration with Centrum ekonomických
studií v Praze (Centre for Economic Studies in
Prague) and Národní observatoř zaměstnanosti
a vzdělávání v Praze (National
Observatory of Employment and Education
in Prague). The subject of the centre's
research activities is an analysis of preconditions
and results of competitiveness of Czech
economy further to fulfilment of the Lisbon
Strategy objectives. In its research, the
Centre attempts to pay attention primarily to
particularities of transitive countries in the
process of their economic and technological
making up. The centre also carries out
attempts at an identification of contemporary
developmental trends and their
implications in economic and political
practice. The goal of the centre's research is
to create qualified analytical documentation
important for decisions of economic-political
and economic subjects to support successful
transition of the Czech Republic to knowledge-based
economy.

The resources for specific research were used
predominantly for research projects carried
out by individual FEA departments which
involved students of doctoral degree
programmes, who participated in publishing
the results of the research projects. A part of
the resources was used to finance costs
connected with the application of the latest
scientific results in teaching, such as the tasks
oriented towards the creation of professional
texts, instructional presentations and
teaching software.
Generally, it is possible to specify the main
fields of the scientific interest at the FEA in
the following way:
economic transformation and its institutional,
financial and structural aspects;
macroeconomic analysis of Czech economy
and its macroeconomic modelling;
research of company sphere and corporate
economics, assessment of corporate efficiency
and factors affecting competitiveness
of individual companies;
research of the public sector, its effectiveness
and controlling;
operation of non-governmental and nonprofit
sector;
public administration and its quality;
crisis management and its financial
aspects;
regional development and its economic
nexus;
history of economic theories and many
other topics.
In the field of science and research, the
faculty does not act alone, isolated from the
real world that surrounds it. On the contrary
­ the Faculty of Economics and Administration
is determined to persistently cultivate
relations and affiliations which connect the
theoretical aspects of research with the
environment of its application, thus with
the real, "everyday" economy, the world of
public administration, corporate sphere and
other fields.
Researchers are involved in common
projects and long-term cooperation with research
centres and other institutions of public
administration, especially with Krajský úřad
Jihomoravského kraje (The Regional Authority
of South Moravia), Ústav územního
rozvoje (Institute for Spatial Development),
Obchodní a hospodářská komora v Brně
(Brno Chamber of Commerce), Regionální
rozvojová agentura Jižní Morava (Regional
Development Agency South Moravia),
Ministerstvo vnitra ČR (Czech Ministry of
Interior), Ministerstvo pro místní rozvoj ČR
(Czech Ministry for Regional Development)
and Ministerstvo financí ČR (Czech Ministry
of Finance), Úřad pro hospodářskou soutěž
(Office for the Protection of Competition),
Moravské zemské muzeum (The Moravian
Museum) and many others. Cooperation of
Centrum pro výzkum neziskového sektoru
(Centre for Nonprofit Sector Research at
FEA MU) with non-governmental non-profit
organizations on various projects is very successful
and fruitful, just as the cooperation
with Veletrhy Brno, a.s. (Trade Fairs Brno)
which focuses on marketing of individual
projects carried out by our partner, as well
as surveys amongst visitors and exhibitors at
the trade fairs.

Goals and Perspectives of the Faculty of Economics and Administration
The present general state of the faculty has
a considerable power and autority in the
sense of the status quo petrification. Is there
anything left to dream about in a company
which ­ so it seems ­ has secured its successful
future for a long time? Volumes of orders
are piling up, everything runs smoothly and
perfectly, yet in spite of all positives, it is
impossible to meet the needs of all potential
customers; all reminds us of the real economic
paradise.
Everyone knows that the good times are
followed by the bad ones and it is advisable
to get prepared for the change in time.
Luckily enough, we are aware of the fact
that general conditions in the area of tertiary
education will change sooner or later ­ be
it due to the demographic structure of the
population, growth factors and structure of
the Czech economy, the role and importance
of information, or the role of various levels of
education in society.
Consistent marketing management of the
school is the key issue in this case. It is necessary
to follow the pace of the period and
consider the future and perspective needs. It
sounds very easy to do, however, a consistent
pursuit of this goal is usually connected
to cosiderable practical difficulties. One
might even wish to paraphrase Ludwig von
Mieses, a renowned economist, and say that
prediction of future is beyond the abilities of
every mortal. We will not be that pesimistic
though and we will try to recognize the
important trends and tendencies on the
basis of which we could create adequate and
diversified offer that will be both attractive
and could withstand competition.
Our expectation of increasing competition
in the field of tertiary education will
gradually require more active efforts in the
field of public relations, promotion of faculty
activities and creation of a closer and more
fruitful relation with our graduates. The
imaginary cornerstone of prosperity can be
found on the geographic borderline of the
Czech Republic. There are two ways how to
cross it: an active one which rests on learning
that better which lies beyond the bordeline
and its consequential import. The passive
way means a more agile exchange of foreign
experts and students and taking advantage
of their knowledge, experience and cultural
diversity (not only) to own advantage and
profit.
We would like to offer quality education
in the first place. Though it may sound
as a bit of a cliché, it is actually one of our
priorities. We do not lie to ourselves claiming
that there is little or even no space for such
efforts. Quality can be perceived as the key
to future success, a competitive advantage
and a presupposition of future prosperity.
We know about the trap in the shape of the
increasing numer of students which brings
interesting economic benefits in a short

period of time, but leads to backwardness
and decline from the long-time perspective.
We will try to avoid such a trap.
Our most important task for future days is
thus to become a prestigious and competitive
institution in the field of economic and
administrative sciences ­ not only in the
Czech Republic, but abroad, too. We wish
to become an active institution which offers
a wide scope of quality study programmes
anchored in the latest findings of science and
research, reacting to the most practical needs
of the market and provided by competent
and well motivated academics. It is not a
minor task, is it?
International cooperation of the Faculty
of Economics and Administration
concentrates predominantly on
universities. We cooperate with
Ekonomická univerzita in Bratislava
(SVK), Univerzita Mateja Bela in Banská
Bystrica (SVK), Akademia Ekonomiczna
in Krakow (POL) and Wirtschaftsuniversität
in Wien (AUT). The core of these
cooperative programmes comprises in
common research resulting in publications
and creation of study materials.
Exchanges of academic staff and
students, professional short-time stays
and lectures are carried out on the
basis of bilateral agreements within the
SOCRATES/ERASMUS exchange programme.
On this level, we co-operate
with numerous universities and colleges
all around Europe; among others with
universities in Finland (Oulu, Tampere,
Jyväskylä), Sweden (Jönköping),
the Netherlands (Den Haag, Utrecht),
Greece (Patra), Portugal (Beja, Coimbra),
Spain (Girona, Navarra), in France
(Rennes, St. Etienne, Lyon, Montpellier),
Austria (Eisenstadt, Wien), Slovenia
(Ljubljana), Germany (Bochum, Göttingen,
Tübingen, Regensburg), Poland
(Kraków, Wroclaw), Liechtenstein, Italy
(Roma) or Great Britain (Huddersfield,
Plymouth).

programme the FEA is involved in;
we participate in JOSZEF or CEEPUS

The Department of Economics is a guarantor
of "National Economics" field of study in a
full-time Bachelor's degree programme and
the "Economics and Economic Policy" field
of study in Master's and Doctoral degree
programmes. The department is also a guarantor
of the inter-faculty full-time Master's
degree study programmes of "Mathematics
­ Economics" and "European Economic,
Administrative and Cultural Studies"
(Bachelor's full-time degree programme),
carried out in cooperation with the Faculty
of Science.
These fields of studies prepare conceptually
educated political economists in such a
manner so that they understand the basic
connections of economic relations, predominantly
on their macroeconomic level. The
studies create a framework for more detailed
understanding of partial economic problems
occurring in other specializations, which

The Department of Public Economics is a
guarantor of the ,,Public Economics" field of
studies in Bachelor's, Master's and Doctoral
degree programmes. The department offers
the "Public Economics and Administration"
field of studies in Bachelor's and Master's
combined studies programmes, just as in lifelong
education programme. In the framework
of full-time Master's degree, the department
is a guarantor of the Administration Publique
field of studies which is taught as bilingual,
Czech and French study programme.
The department prepares students for work
in various positions in the public sector. The
studies are devoted to the problematics of
public budgets (studies of tax system play
the crucial role) which is offered to students
of different fields of study as well. Therefore,
graduates of the Department of Public
Economics can find a job not only in the
sector of tax and duties administration, but in
tax counselling, too. Simultaneously, students
learn about ways of effective investing of
public funds into the sphere of employment
and social welfare, health service, education
system, culture or sports, just as into housing
and technical infrastructure, mass media and
scientific research, and the whole domain of
public administration including army, police
and judiciary.
The work of an economist in the public
economy ­ be its focus on acquisition of resources
or their allocation or use ­ challenges
his or her ability to apprehend, understand
and respect political and social aspects of economic
processes and their spatial dimensions.
This is why this field of study includes subjects
such as public politics, public administration,
social politics or regional or municipal
economics. These subjects are supposed to
prepare students to engage in interdisciplinary
cooperation, so much needed in public
economy.

The department of Corporate Economy is
a guarantor of the field of study "Corporate
Economy" in a full-time Bachelor's
degree programme, as well as in longcycle
Master's degree and follow-up
Master's degree programmes in full-time,
combined, and lifelong learning modes
of study. Other fields of study offered
by the department are "Management",
available in a combined Bachelor's degree
programme and in lifelong learning
study mode, and "Corporate Economy
and Management", available in doctoral
degree programme.
The studies are oriented towards
economy and business management,
focusing on business organization as a
whole, as well as on individual functions
it performs: production, human resources,
and technology and research; commercial,
economic, and financial functions.
The aim of the studies is to provide
students with the knowledge of factual,
economic, organizational, informational
and managing aspects of processes
involved in company operation, and at
the same time, of their interdependence.
Together with gaining theoretical
knowledge of the processes, the objective
of the programme is also to develop
competences which play a key role in
executive and managing positions.
The programme "Corporate Economy"
is mainly oriented to large and medium
businesses.
Graduates are qualified for various
positions in different sections of business
enterprises, including middle management
and positions of assistants of top
managers, analysts, managing systems
developers, or economic and organizational
consultants.
Department of Corporate EconomyDepartment of Corporate Economy
broadens the possibilities of students' success
on the job market.
Concordantly with their specializations,
graduates from the Department of Economics
are very likely to get jobs in fields which
require wider orientation in theoretic and
practical fundaments of microeconomics
and macroeconomics, economic politics,
analytically oriented functions, in public and
regional administration, public and private
companies, economic journalism or economic
consulting etc.

The department provides instruction in law
subjects prescribed by faculty programmes
and also in applied subjects from the sphere
of private law for "National Economy",
"Corporate Economy" and "Financial Enterprise"
fields of study. Apart from internal
teachers, these subjects are taught by teachers
from the Faculty of Law and by professional
lawyers representing different fields
(Constitutional court, Prosecutor's offices,
and advocacy). The departmenťs cooperation
with experts from various institutions
(banks, insurance companies, Komise pro
cenné papíry ­ Czech securities commission)
enables an effective transformation of their
experience into lectures on topical law issues.

programmes. The Faculty of Economics
and Administration is open not only for
those applying for full-time modes of study,
but also for people interested in combined
modes of study (i.e. extramural education).
Within lifelong learning framework, it is
possible to take part in study programmes
in Telč, Bratislava, and Brno which are available
in a combined mode of study in the
following Bachelor's degree programmes:
"Regional Development and Administration",
"Regional Development and Tourist
Business", "Banking", and "Management".
A follow-up Master's degree programme in
lifelong study mode is offered only in Brno
in the following programmes: "Financial

The Department of Regional Economics
and Administration is a guarantor of
"Regional Development and Administration"
field of study in both full-time
and combined Bachelor's degree study
modes, in a full-time long-cycle and follow-up
Master's degree study mode, and
in a combined follow-up Master's degree
study mode. The department also grants
"Regional Development and Tourist Business"
and "Regional Development and
Administration" fields of study in lifelong
learning study mode.
The training provided by the department
makes prospective economists
ready to apply economic decision-making
on the level of regions, cities and
municipalities. At the same time, they
are equipped with the basic knowledge
of public administration.
Finding solutions to regional and local
problems usually demands an interdisciplinary
approach. Therefore, students
learn to communicate with experts from
other sectors in order to guarantee a
complex decision-making process. Students
are also provided with instruction
about how to create and design development
projects and basic methodology in
public administration.
Graduates have good career prospects
not only in public administration institutions,
but also in private organizations
in which regional aspects of economic
decision-making need to be taken into
consideration.

Language Centre at the Faculty of Economics
and Administration is one of the sections of
University Language Centre. This department
is responsible for providing language education
to students in all accredited programmes
and fields of study in all modes of study.

The department is a guarantor of "Financial
Enterprise" field of study in a
full-time Bachelor's degree programme,
as well as in long-cycle Master's degree
and follow-up Master's degree programmes
in full-time, combined, and
lifelong learning modes. Other fields of
study provided by the department are
the following: "Monetary system" in
combined Bachelor's degree programme,
"Banking" in lifelong learning mode, and
newly offerred "Finance" in doctoral
degree study mode.
The programmes are aimed at providing
students with education in the fields
of company finance, accountancy, banking,
insurance, international finance, and
financial markets. The emphasis is on
grasping both theoretical and practical
aspects of the fields mentioned above.
By means of optional subjects, students
have the opportunity to deepen
their knowledge of financial development,
European integration, financial investment,
bank and insurance company
accountancy, company accountancy,
European accountancy, taxes, audit,
insurance market and other fields.
Graduates are sought after for positions
of qualified staff members and
managers in financial institutions, e.g.
banks, insurance companies, funds,
but also in financial and accountancy
sections of companies and other
organizations.
