About Human Rights Interactive Map

Instruction manual

HRIM offers several useful tools for your research.

• The first dynamic function is the interactive map that allows you to display all states that ratified particular human rights instrument you are interested in. You need to find an abbreviated name of the instrument in the panel located just above the interactive map and click on the respective button. Subsequently, the coloured icons (representing ratification of the respective instrument) appear. This gives you the first impression of the instrument’s applicability. If you click on “All Maps” button, you will get an overview of all major human rights instruments that the states have ratified at the moment.

  Note

  Every human rights instrument has its own map icon.

• Secondly, if you click on an instrument’s map icon you display a date of its ratification by the respective state. If you seek detailed information on the respect for human rights in the particular state simply click on “More details” link to visit the state’s profile.

  Note

  Square-shaped icons stand for the universal instruments and circle-shaped ones represent the instruments with regional effect.

• Third application is our “List of States” located in the next tab of the panel. It allows you to “filter” the states with the help of detailed criteria such as signature or ratification of any human rights instrument or on the basis of geographic location of the states.

  Note

  Click on the state button in the list of the states to visit its whole profile. If you search for all European countries that signed and ratified CAT but not ECHR, this is your way to go!

• Fourthly, the state’s profile provides you with a complete set of information on signature or ratification of particular human rights instruments of the respective state. Moreover, it includes overview of the protocols to these instruments that had been ratified by the respective state and the texts of reservations to the instruments.

  Note

  Ratified protocols are indicated by Arabic numbers according to the order of their adoption. Some texts of reservations have been abridged. For full texts, please visit the official website of the instrument (see “Useful links” section).
