4. Explaining Differences and Similarities Across Cultures in Europe and Elsewhere

What may account for differences and similarities across different cultures? We will look for
answers in this topic. First do the exercise in source 1. Then study Hosftede's dimensions of
synthetic cultures (source 2). The theory provides one of the fundamental classifications of
cultures and cultural identities. Revisit the exercise in source 3 and 4 and find out which
cultural dimensions you studied in source 2 had guided your choice in the exercise. In the
following source 5 you can find out which cultural dimensions are considered typical for countries
in Europe and elsewhere. Class discussion will follow.
