GAČR - what is the agency purpose and focus
• an institution established by state to support basic scientific research in the Czech
Republic
• two main goals:
o to fund basic research on a competitive basis
o to promote international cooperation in basic research
• all disciplines of basic research
• individual research teams
• bottom – up principle
• evaluation based solely on excelence (of the PI and the project)
• peer review system of evaluation

Average year budget for all projects (including projects in the 2nd
and 3rd year) is about 3,5 billion CZK.

STANDARD PROJECTS
• Goals: To promote excellence in basic research.
• Eligibility Requirements: One scientist (or a research
team) who work at Czech research institution, or will be
employed at the institution from the beginning of the
project; topic of research is chosen by the applicant.
• Funding Duration: 2 or 3 years
• Maximum costs of a project: no limit
• No investments allowed.
• Call for proposals open once a year.
• 1 PI can obtain grant repeatedly

JUNIOR PROJECTS
• Goals: To promote excellence in basic research. To support
young excellent researchers
• Eligibility Requirements: 1 PI or 1 PI and 1 co-PI
• Maximum 35 years old, not more than 8 years from the
completing of doctoral degree
• Obligatory 6 months internship
• Funding Duration: 2 or 3 years
• Maximum costs of a project: no limit
• Investments allowed
• Call for proposals open once a year

BILATERAL PROJECTS
• Goals: To support international cooperation in a field of basic
research. To enable the better exchange of scientific information
and techniques and the use of specialised equipment available in
the involved countries.
• Cooperating foreign agencies:
o Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG), Germany
o National Research Foundation of Korea (NRF), South Korea
o Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST), Taiwan
• Funding Duration: 2 or 3 years
• Maximum costs of a project: no limit
• Call for proposals open once a year
