Public Policy Analysis

Selected methods

Again, we recommend you to start with the presentation in PowerPoint. Try to answer or at least start looking for solutions of tasks or questions presented as "classwork".

A very short presentation tries to point out the most common concepts regarding social (and health) policy. It can be helpful for the following assignment (see below).

Read carefully this selected chapter from Dunn's textbook. It is quite long; however, you can skip technical (math) parts. We want you to know about methods, to be able to conduct some of them using your competence from previous or subsequent classes (statistics, econometrics, calculus...). We're not able to teach you to use all of them.

Forecasting expected policy outcomes

Assignment  (compulsory up to 10 points)

Due to: May 15

Your task is to project, predict, or conjecture future states (for the year 2025) of following ten effectors or descriptors. You are supposed to find data, explain a method you will use. Finally, please comment each of your findings - what are the main factors that affect its validity and/or reliability. Do not present data itself - just carefully identify the source. You can use a country or group of countries you like for any indicator (not necessarily the same).

  1. Estimated life expectancy at birth
  2. Mid-year population, age 60-64 years
  3. Hospital beds per 100 000
  4. Number of physicians
  5. Prevalence of current tobacco smoking among people
  6. Alcohol consumption
  7. Long-term care expenditures
  8. Health expenditures per capita
  9. GDP - Gross domestic product
  10. Whatever you like :-)
