Academic WebQuest Work together with your team to answer the questions. Use your own experiences of academic writing, your classmates, me, and the weblinks from class (see slides) to help you. Of course, search for more information online, but don’t assume the first site you find is a good one (there’s a lot of rubbish out there). Write your answers below and copy and paste examples and useful links as you see fit. Better still: write your own examples as these will be more memorable. Don’t copy and paste large chunks of text from websites. This is a good opportunity to practise your note taking and summarising. Besides, it’s lazy and you’re better than that. Feel free to change the font, style, layout etc of the document - it’s not sacred :-) Quotations 1. What are some good reasons for using a quotation rather than a paraphrase? Think of at least three. 2. What information must be included with a direct quotation? Give examples. 3. What is the difference between a ‘long quotation’ and a ‘short quotation’? Give examples. 4. Which are usually more common in academic writing: direct quotations or paraphrases? Why? Citations 1. What information should an in-text citation contain? Give an example. 2. What is the difference between an integral and non-integral citation? Give examples. 3. Which is generally more common in academic writing: integral or non-integral citation? Why? 4. What tenses are commonly used with citations? Give examples. Referencing 1. Which referencing style (e.g. Harvard) does your department follow? 2. What do we need to reference in our writing? (And what don’t we?) 3. Why is referencing important in academic writing? Think of at least three reasons. 4. What are the consequences of poor/no referencing in your work?
