A more thorough and academic explanation of the nature of BPM can be seen in the following lecture video. The stress in this video is on the importance of IT for BPM. Pay attention especially to the example from the banking sector and on cited sources (supplementary reading: Michael Hammer: Reengineering Work: Don't Automate, Obliterate).

To fully understand the nature of BPM, you should know something about its origins. In this video, Jan Mendling explains the main roots of BPM.
