Expected learning outcomes

  • Exploration of the nature of theory and types of theories in business and management research.
  • Present, explain, and critically examine theories used in business informatics research, their use, and the contested issues.
  • Evaluate different business informatics theories, choose one, synthesize, and use that for research or application.

Major learning activities

  • The course combines different teaching methods where the purpose is to engage the students in discussions and critical thinking actively.
  • The employed teaching methods are anchored in the flipped classroom and case-based learning (with international diversity of cases).
  • The focus will also be on pre-lecture quizzes, seminar activities, student presentations, and active discussion in this course.
  • Students will give presentations (in groups of two to three) of relevant applications of theories in research and practice and different international contexts.
  • Students will be prepared to write a research proposal.

Assessment

The assessment of this course is based on four assignments.

  • First, you must study the reading material before each session and attend the pre-class online quiz. 10% of your credit will be assigned based on the achieved mark in the quiz. Another 10% will be assigned based on your active participation during the discussion in the lecture session. Overall, 20% will be accounted for this assignment.
  • Second, groups of 2-3 students must be created by the start of the third week. Students must make their team and inform the tutor of the team formation. Otherwise, the tutor will randomly make teams. Each group has to choose a topic from the list (see course schedule). Otherwise, one topic will be assigned to groups randomly. Each group has to choose a paper related to the associated theory from a list of papers that will be provided by the tutor (you are free to propose other related papers that must be confirmed with the tutor). Then, the group will prepare a paper presentation on their chosen topic. This will include describing an application of the chosen theory in a domain, conceptualization, and operationalization of the theory, method, limitations, etc. Applications of the theory in international contexts and discussing the potential differences in different contexts (e.g., technological, social) are highly appreciated. The associated group will get 30% of the course credit for this activity. The presentation will be assessed by the tutor and also peers based on the a) quality of the paper and the journal it is published; b) the quality of the presentation, the level of presenters' understanding of the paper, and the level of disseminating the paper's text and idea to the audience; c) the quality of the presenters' input and insights on the paper (e.g., discussing the limitations of the research, potential alternative theories or research method that could be used, how the results could be different if alternative options were adopted, how the results could be different if conducted in other contexts such as different industries, countries)
  • Third, students shall prepare a research proposal individually and submit it to Ahad. This will include presenting a research or practice problem and suggesting a theory to solve the problem. The proposal can be a foundation for your thesis that you must enrol in the following semester. The deadline to submit up to three topics to Ahad is 15th December. One topic will be chosen by the end of December (early submissions are welcome, so you will have more time to develop the proposal). Students will need to submit the final proposal by 10th February. It is recommended to share the work in progress with Ahad for early feedback. This assignment has 50% of the credit. The following template must be used to prepare the proposal.

To sum up, the share of each assignment in your final mark is as follows. To pass the course, you must achieve at least 50% of the points from each part. Meanwhile, you cannot skip some assignments.

  • Pre-Class Online Quizzes and Class Discussion: 20% (10% each)
  • Paper summary and presentation: 30%                                     
  • Research Proposal: 50%
  • Active participation: Extra 10%

  • A >= 90 points
  • B >= 80 points
  • C >= 70 points
  • D >= 60 points
  • E >= 55 points
