Preparing the official assignment
The official assignment is the main outcome of the Thesis course. You will be awarded credits for that.
To get credits from Thesis class you must submit a research proposal to your supervisor, which includes:
o aim of the thesis,
o draft proposal of research questions or hypothesis,
o draft proposal of methods used for answering research questions or for support/falsification of hypothesis,
o description of discussed problem and its context,
o initial literature review in the recommended range of 1500 words and minimum of 12 sources
The supervisor will create official assignment in the information system based on the above research proposal.
This assignment will be approved by the head of the department and the Dean of the Faculty to become your official (and binding) thesis assignment. This assignment must be fulfilled. Fulfilling the assignment (especially the goal of the thesis specified there) is one of the important criteria used by the supervisor and an independent reader when evaluating your thesis.
What to do if...
...you would like to change the given theme
of your final Thesis, official assignment, and your Supervisor?
Such a situation is possible in justified
cases. However, the process differs in the first semester, when the student
signs up for the topic, and in the following semesters, when the student
already has an officially confirmed topic.
During the first semester (by the time the
student has officially signed for the Thesis), it is possible to change the
thesis topic (i.e. preliminary assignment) if the Supervisor agrees. No formal
action is required after obtaining the Supervisor’s approval. The student
prepares a proposal for an official assignment in correlation with the new
topic. Such proposal is then uploaded into the IS by the Supervisor at the end
of the semester and is taken as a valid assignment. It is also possible to
change the Supervisor during the first semester if both the previous and the
new Supervisor agree. The previous Supervisor will then sign out the topic in
IS, and the new Supervisor will then register. The student is not automatically
entitled to change the topic nor the Supervisor. It is always necessary to
justify the change and obtain the consent of the supervisors concerned.
During the following semesters, the student
already has an official assignment, which, same as the Supervisor, is approved
by the Dean. To change the assignment or Supervisor, the student must submit an
official request for a change of the Supervisor or topic. The Supervisor will
then pronounce the request (temporary or possibly also the new Supervisor), the
Head of the Department. Finally, it is assessed by the Vice-dean of the
Studies. The request should always include a justification for the necessity of
the changes. If the request for the changes is approved, the student will
prepare a new assignment under his Supervisor’s guidance. Followingly, the
Guarantor of the Study Program and the Head of the Department will pronounce,
and the Dean will sign the request. It may happen that the request will be
approved, but then the new assignment is not going to be approved due to
content or formal remarks. In such a case, it is necessary to edit the
assignment. Until the student has a new assignment approved by the Dean, the
original assignment is still valid.
Students should require the change of
assignment shortly after they find out that the change is necessary. It
shouldn’t happen that a student works on a non-approved BT / DT assignment by
hoping that a change will be then approved. Moreover, it’s not expected that
the student submits the Change request in the semester in which they would like
to submit the final Thesis. The whole process of the change is administratively
demanding and can take several weeks. Therefore, the Head of the Department of
Business Administration doesn’t recommend granting a request for a change in
the assignment if the student submits it less than two months before the final
deadline. It is not certain that, in this case, the new assignment will be
approved in time. Even if this happens, the student would no longer have the
space to fulfil it. If the student deviates from the assignment only slightly
and can justify it, there is no need to request any changes from the
assignment. In such a case, the student explains the reasons for the deviation
and defends his procedure in front of the Commission at the Final State
Examination.
