Presenting internationally

Lesson 5

Ted talk recommended by Dóra  - for those of you who are interested

Continuation of  presenting SUMMARY OF AN ARTICLE.

Students will find an article in an academic journal / scholarly journal or a business/economic journal they are interested in and that they believe might be interesting for their colleagues too.

The length of the text should be about 1000 words, not much shorter.

The main aim is to introduce the main ideas of an article to the audience unfamiliar with the topic and  make the main ideas clear.
Copy the link to the article to the shared spreadsheet here - section summarising an article.

Students are expected to use several reporting verbs to distance themselves from the content of the text and to give credit to the author. See list in the handout distributed in the lesson.

For this presentation, prepare a three-slide ppt presentation.

  • slide one: the headline, the source and the name of the author of the text, student’s name
  • slide two: specific vocabulary relevant to the topic to explain (if there are expressions you expect others not to be familiar with)
  • slide three: bullet points with main ideas (3-5)

Please, upload their ppt presentation into the depository below.

What to focus on? - Look at the aspects we will be providing feedback on.

  • organisation of the presentation (introduction, main body, conclusion, A&Q session)
  • content - clarity of ideas
  • relevant use of reporting verbs
  • communication with the audience (establishing rapport with the audience, eye contact, body language)
  • speed of speech, intonation, work with voice
