There are many views on milk bars based on where in the world you ask people about them. In Australia they were small grocery stores. In Poland you can buy sausages in them and drink beer and they are something cheap (it is something that came during communist era). The first businesses using the name “milk bar” was started in India in 1930 by an Englishman, James Meadow Charles when he opened “Lake View Milk Bar” at Bangalore. The concept soon spread to the United Kingdom, where it was encouraged by the Temperance Society as a morally acceptable alternative to the pub, and over 1,000 milk bars had opened nationally by the end of 1936. Milk bars were known in the United States at least as early as 1940 as evidenced by contemporary radio recordings. By the late 1940s, milk bars had evolved to include not only groceries, but also became places where young people could buy ready-made food, nonalcoholic drinks and socialise. The milk bar as a social venue was gradually replaced by fast food franchises, such as McDonald’s. IN THE MOOD Milk bar should be hust something people love, from small children to old grandmas, to young pair willing to enjoy food, for somebody in a hurry searching for some tasteful snack, for a businessman who wants to begin his day with a simple sip of a great coffee or tea and reinforcing breakfast… National Milk Bars were once a common sight in Wales, and even The Beatles dropped in for a coffee at a branch on their way to the top, but the restaurants could soon be a thing of the past. Customers appear to be shunning their frothy coffees, cream cakes and milk shakes in favour of more sophisticated and trendy coffee shops. The elaborate decor has disappeared from the remaining milk bars. It was originally designed by Morris Fuller Benton for the American Type Founders Company in 1903. The company went bankrupt in 1993, and since the original typeface was created before 1923, the typeface is in the public domain. The League of Moveable Type decided to make our own version, and contribute it to the Open Source Type Movement. CANTARELL The Cantarell typeface family was designed during Dave Crossland’s of Typeface Design in the Department of Typography at the University of Reading, England. Cantarell is a contemporary Humanist sans serif designed for on-screen reading. He claims, that as his very first typeface design, the typeface has many faults, yet it achieves the goal of improving readability on this device. Since the design was tested mainly when displayed on-screen at small sizes, the printed output (especially of the bold and oblique) may not work well.
