Spring 2020 Instructions

Online Exam Interview

TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS: Your interview is going to take place using Google Hangouts Chat. Make sure you have Google services allowed for your IS account and be ready to receive a call from your teacher shortly before the time of your exam.

AUDIO AND VIDEO QUALITY: Both parties need to be heard and seen clearly -- please make sure beforehand that this is feasible with your equipment.

ID CHECK: Please have your ISIC or any other ID card ready to show to your examiner before the actual exam starts (as well as your FCE/CAE certificate if you have one).

INTRODUCTION: The discussion starts with small talk about the student's life in the past weeks and the student tells the examiner what they have done for English so far and what degree programme they are in. This part is meant for the student to get used to the accent of the examiner and to ease the stress.

MAIN PART: Discussing certain topics from IT related to professional and future life of the students; advantages, disadvantages, defending one's opinion etc. Relevant level of formal language is required (you can get inspiration from IS Interactive Outline document for discussions).

As you know, the exam confirms that you have at least B2 CEFR level. This means that you can, for example:

  • interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without strain for either party,
  • talk about your personal and professional lifestyle, including describing your life at work, explaining your education, experience, strengths and weaknesses, and discussing your career path,
  • talk about mental processes and how you can use them to improve your effectiveness, and about what you like to read and make recommendations about valuable articles or books to read,
  • communicate detailed information reliably and can develop a clear argument,
  • participate in formal discussions using appropriate language in social situations, including praising and expressing sympathy, and can deal with relatively complex awkward situations that arise in social and work-related contexts.

LENGTH: The examination will last about 15-20 minutes.

EVALUATION: A general chart with an overview of all the evaluated criteria is available below. A more detailed chart with descriptions of specific skills and abilities is available for you to view and download underneath the chart. You need at least 18 points to pass.
