Course Overview and Objectives
Welcome to Introduction to Academic Writing (VB000Eng)
Overview
The aims of this module is to:
- Introduce the basics of academic writing in English
- Help understand the style of academic writing
- Improve academic writing skills
- Consider the planning, structure, and organisation of an academic writing
Course Outline
The course spans across a period of 13 weeks.
For weeks 1 - 7, important areas and concepts in academic writing will be considered and discussed. These will be discussed during in-person lectures across 4 seminar groups. As well as attending the lectures, homework and practice exercises will be issued which will need to be submitted accordingly.
Across the period of weeks 8 - 13, there will be no in-person teaching. Instead, across this period, you will be required to submit 2 drafts from your thesis in order to receive feedback on your academic writing.
Course Assessment
The requirements for passing the course are as follows:
- All classes must be attended (7 in total).
- All homework for all classes must be submitted by the given deadline.
- Three additional practice exercises must be submitted by the given deadline.
- 2 drafts must be submitted for feedback by the given deadline. The second draft must demonstrate that the feedback from the first draft has been implemented.
