The Bioinformatics Seminar is a combination of a journal club run by registered students and a lecture seminar organized by the teaching staff as a series of guest lectures given by external speakers (please, see program at the bottom of the page).
The goal of this seminar is to gain insights into problems studied in bioinformatics, and the overarching topic of this semester is “New frontiers in sequencing technology” and “Algorithmic advances in bioinformatics”.
Students will practice presentation and discussion techniques in front of an audience. This course will run in parallel with
IV110/IV114 Bioinformatics and Systems Biology Project that can optionally provide a hands-on
experience with the analysis of next-generation and nanopore sequencing data, and the use of reproducible workflows.
To fulfill the requirements of this course, the students are expected to:
• Prepare their own presentation.
This will be a 15-20 minute talk followed by a 5-10 minute discussion. This can be either
– A 30-minute slot during the regular seminar time OR
• Participate in 6 additional talks (also, please, seek engagement during the
discussion). This can be achieved in the following ways:
– Attending an invited talk either in person or virtually
– Attending a seminar by a bioinformatics lab at FI MU and submitting a short summary (a single paragraph is sufficient)
Everyone is highly encouraged to attend seminars by their fellow classmates.
