Katka

Label of significant experience: Explaining to a friend active listening.

Context: Two friends that are couple visited me between 1st and 2nd blok. The girl was frustrated and depressed because she is unemployed and burned out from her previous job. Now she want to get into game industry into some artsy position but she never done anything like 3D modeling. So she needed to learn it by her self now but she is unmotivated. Her boyfriend on the other hand is a programmer... and he thinks in that way. He was trying to motivate her. Provide a solutions. But he wasn't able to actually listen and emphasize with how she feels. When we discussed it, she was really down and felt like shit cause in her boyfriends eyes it looked so easy to start. But when I stopped the guy and showed him that now he should try active listening, and showed him how to do that I made two observations. 1. the girl was relived that somebody understood her... 2. the guy didn't get how just listening could help... So... for me it is natural when I see that someone needs to be just heared... but for someone it is unknown concept which surprised me... so overall I explained to the guy why it is important... Now I looking forward when I see them again, and if something changed...

Your feelings/emotions: Well I was surprised that it is not that obvious to everybody, and happy that I saw a friend relieved after I tried actively listen to her.

Shiri

Label of significant experience: The active listening (in group) at the last Block was very meaningful to me.

Context: It emphasized the importance of repeating the others problems in our own words to make sure we understood the problem, and also the importance of asking questions.

Your feelings/emotions: I feel that we are not put enough effort to make sure we understand the others story, And sometimes instinctively we draw conclusions and give advice. As someone who was on the sharing side in the last session, I felt that the questions helped me reach very important conclusions that helped me a lot.

Hannah

Label of significant experience: Learning While Having Conversation With Friends

Context: Two weeks ago me and my boyfriend decided to go out and try to find new bars. We texted the groupchat we have with all of our friends from Muni. We went to a place called Jazz U Bar, but only one other person showed up which I thought may be awkward. I had never met him before but he was friends with my boyfriend.

The night turned out to not be awkward at all. We all had a great time and on the walk home we were able to talk about some interesting political and cultural discussions. Our friend is from Syria and he gave us a lot of insight on what it is like living in the UAE and other Arab countries. This included his own perspectives, but also the history of arab countries including some interesting details about when the US invaded Iraq.

Your feelings/emotions: This conversation could have easily become very argumentative or tense due to the topic of conversation, but instead became an important learning moment for me. I used active listening to find deeper understanding in the conversation and other skills we learned in class to ask questions about his experience without creating conflict.

I think that the US news can often be inaccurate or biased, and the US government has tendecies to be Islamiphobic. Hearing about these events from the perspective of an Arab person was very interesting an enlightening for me.

Gema

Label of significant experience: Learning how to apply the technique of non-violent communication

Context: I have used this technique that was shown to us in class with my roomate because of the cleaning situation and after a few tries of using it the situation got better. Now when I need her to clean something in the room I use non-violent communication, as it seems to work most of the time.

Your feelings/emotions: I am really glad that this course has shown me communication techniques that I can use in my everyday life and that with a bit of practice I can get them to actually work.
