TheyareaccompaniedbytwoLatin inscriptions,translatedas'Supported byHeaven,leaningontheearth,I persevere'and'HereawaitstheMora- vianEstateshappyhour'. Theartisticdirector,VladimírMorávek, placedthestatueonthetheaterroof, explaining,"Itguardsthelightwell.At thesamurai'sfeetisagoose,symboli- zingthefragilityoflife.Thesamurai, takingawalk,realizestheimportance ofpayingattentiontofragility,tender- ness,andthepoet'swords." OneofBrno'soldestgateswasloca- tedonthisspot.Itwastheonlygate thatcouldbeusedbyJewstoenter thecity,fromwhomtheso-called Jewishtollwascollected.In1835,the JewishGate,althoughanarchitectu- ralgem,wasdemolishedbytheBrno citizens.Today,theJewishGateis commemoratedbyastoneplaqueon thecornerhousebetweenMasaryk andNádražníStreets,whichislocated abovetheentrancetotoday'sKFC. InBrnowealsohavetheStatueof Liberty.Inreality,however,itisa symbolofthelight-bearer,calledin Latinluciferus,whowasasymbol ofenlightenment,education,brin- ginglight. Afterrenovatingthehouse,the ownerdiscoveredthattherewasstill roomforahousesign.Intheend,he decidedonadesignwithantsswar- mingalloverthehouse.Accordingto theartist,theantsfitinwiththe naturaldecoroftheArtNouveau facadeofthehouseand,associal insects,theyarealsoasymbolofthe humanhustleandbustlethatisinhe- renttothecitycentre. Overtwometershighstatuewitha child'sbodyandanadultface.It standsatthebottomofthesquarein frontoftheRedutaTheatre,where WolfgangAmadeusMozartgave concertsasaneleven-year-oldchild prodigy.Mozart'sstatueresemblesa charmingartistbalancingonastyli- sedclavichordthatformstheheadof apillar.Hisnakednesssymbolizesthe desireforfreedom,andthemove- mentofthefigureisacomic,rococo bowofthemusicianandaclassical allegoryofjoy,freedomandflight.
