English 1

Course assessment

1. Set of academic/technical vocabulary

Over the semester, create a set of at least 100 words/phrases of academic and technical vocabulary. Use the articles you read in English and the wordlists from Session 2 to help you select vocabulary to include.

You vocabulary set must:

  • include at least 100 words/phrases
  • a definition of the word/phrase in English or a translation into Czech/Slovak
  • at least one example sentence using the word/phrase

If you can, it would also be useful to add more information about the word/phrase, e.g. common patterns showing how it's used, different forms of the word (noun, verb, adjective etc.) and further examples.

You can organise and present your vocabulary set any way you like. You might create a 'vocabulary log' in Microsoft Word or Excel (see example below), create a flashcard set using Quizlet, or organise your vocabulary in mind maps.

Upload your vocabulary set in electronic form to the homework vaults folder below.

DEADLINE: 23:59, Monday 18 December

2. Introduction to a research paper

Write a working introduction to a research article on a topic related to your doctoral research. Use the CARS model from Session 3 (also below) to organise your introduction effectively. Your introduction should be between 200-400 words and written in an appropriate academic style.

Note: if you're currently writing a research article - or have written one recently - you can use this for your assignment. However, please do not submit co-authored work for assessment - the introduction must be your own work.

Upload your introduction as a Microsoft Word document to the homework vaults folder below.

DEADLINE: 23:59, Monday 18 December

3. Text analysis (cohesion)

Choose a paragraph of between 100-200 words from a research article related to your doctoral research. Colour code the text to show the different cohesive devices the writer uses.

Upload your text analysis as a Microsoft Word document to the homework vaults folder below.

DEADLINE: 23:59, Monday 18 December

Use the colour code here to show how the cohesion is created in your paragraph.
