Read the first three pages of Hyland's (2002) paper above on identity in academic writing (stop before 'Creating learner awareness'). While you're reading, think about:

  • How does the use of the pronouns and We vary across disciplines? Why?
  • Who uses personal pronouns more frequently in their writing: students or experts? Why?
  • How do student and expert writers use pronouns differently in their writing? (Think about the function/role.)
