FINAL ESSAY The deadline for final essay has been extended from 29 May 2006 to 7 June 2006. Late delivery will not be tolerated. Required format of the essay is the following: 12 point font, 1.5 or double line spacing, 3.000 -- 5.000 words maximum. (go to Nástroje; Počet slov; Slova) You may wish to consult the 3 provided or any similar resources on how to write an academic essay (see files "Essay Writing 1", "Essay Writing 2", "Essay Writing 3"). The essay should have a title, introduction with a clear thesis statement, a body where you develop your argument, and a conclusion. A detailed bibliography listed at the end of the essay is also expected and will be a part of your mark. Choose one style of referencing and stick to it throughout the essay. (For more on referencing, see for example http://www.is.bham.ac.uk/ppm/publications/skills/preparing.pdf) Take extra caution not to plagiarise! Insert the page numbers but do not use any unnecessary formatting styles. If inserting any pictures, tables, charts, etc., remember to reference the source accordingly. When your essay is finished, e-mail it to my university account by 7 June 2006 at the very latest: 195233@mail.muni.cz (Check your Outbox in order to make sure your message did not bounce back. Excuses related to computers, serves, access to e-mail, etc. will not be accepted.) Remember to spell-check your essay! Select one of the following topics for your essay: o Theoretical discussion of basic concepts (race, ethnicity and nation, racism, (ethno)nationalism) o Descent communities, the role of kinship and `the Other' o Discussion of the relevance of historical antecedents for the contemporary scholarship of racism (the role of imperialism, European expansion, colonialism, slavery) o Critical evaluation of the so-called `primordial' arguments (with a possible focus on sociobiology) o Modernity and race, science and racism o Contemporary intolerance and xenophobia (may include a discussion of the Radical Right, anti-immigration prejudice, or current ethnic/racial conflict) o Are we seeing the erosion or rise of ethnic, national and/or racial identity in the contemporary world? Discuss. (May include a focus on globalisation, fundamentalism, multiculturalism) o Focus on one of the key scholars and provide a critical evaluation of their arguments (theoretical) o Genocide (Armenian genocide, the Holocaust, Rwanda or Bosnia)
