Debating in English

Week 10: Model UN - 4. 5. 2021

UN Ocean Conference

Host countries: Kenya & Portugal (Natez & Colin)

+200 participating countries & international organizations

Students should choose their own country to represent as a head of state or relevant government institution (e.g. ministry). Alternatively, you may participate as a civil society representative, business entity, academic/scientific institution, or marine life advocacy organization from the respective country (ideally a coastal or island nation or relevant international organization).

Two articles to provide background for the conference and Sustainable Development Goal 14:

https://www.un.org/sustainabledevelopment/oceans/

Each student should prepare his/her own stance for SDG 14 under the UN Ocean Conference, including problems
that their countries face, proposed solutions for their countries, and proposed solutions for international waters. The below info may serve as a basic guide:

Solutions for a sustainably managed ocean involves green technology and innovative uses of marine resources. It also includes addressing the threats to health, ecology, economy and governance of the ocean - acidification, marine litter and pollution, illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing, and the loss of habitats and biodiversity.

Each student will present their stance one by one, and then we will decide which proposals to accept/reject from each country and begin debating these issues collectively in order to form a final draft proposal for action.
