Interest Groups and Lobbying

The story of Jack Abramoff:
Time: Jack Abramoff: The Man Who Bought America
There are several short documentaries on Jack Abramoff available on Youtube. You might also be able to access the 2010 movie Casino Jack or the 2010 documentary Casino Jack and the United States of Money.
During my lecture
I mentioned grassroots lobbying. This is a rather specific strategy of interest
representation / promotion which - despite the name - does not necessarily have
to be considered a form of lobbying. Grassroots lobbying -involves the public
contacting decision-makers about a specific issue typically by emails, letters,
social media or other forms of messages. Unlike direct lobbying, the
communication is mostly one-sided (from the lobbying public towards the
decision-maker). Internet makes grassroots lobbying significantly easier and
cheaper ("flattened information costs"). Amnesty International or the
American NRA are examples of organizations that often ask their members to
participate in grassroots lobbying (write their representative about a specific
issue).
