Learning and memory. Language. Functional asymmetry of the hemispheres.

In this lecture we will talk about the neurophysiological basis of learning and memory, we will divide memory according to the time course of the storage and the nature of information stored, explain the difference between declarative and non-declarative memory, describe the function and structural basis of semantic, episodic memory, associative and non-associative learning. We will describe the modern concept of speech, give examples of speech disorders, i.e. aphasia. We explain the functional difference between the speech-dominant and non-dominant hemispheres.

Basic terms:

Sensory memory, working memory, long-term memory; declarative (explicit) and non-declarative (implicit) memory. Semantic, episodic memory. Associative learning, non-associative (habituation, sensitization) learning. Broca's aphasia, Wernicke's aphasia. Speech dominant and non-dominant hemisphere. Prosody.
