From a sociological perspective, identity is a dynamic and multifaceted concept shaped by individual experiences, social structures, and collective processes. This course examines identity as a subjective construction of the self (Cooley, Mead, Schutz) and an objective social reality (Bourdieu, Giddens, Bauman), situated within the broader framework of social interaction, power dynamics, and cultural reproduction.

Drawing from classical and contemporary sociological thought, the course explores how identity is formed, negotiated, and maintained in different social contexts. It engages with symbolic interactionism (Mead, Cooley), phenomenological sociology (Schutz), structuralist and post-structuralist approaches (Bourdieu, Foucault), and critical theories of identity that address issues of race, gender, class, postcolonialism, and globalization.
