The questions relate to the four pieces of reading that have been set for study before the taught
aspect of the course begins in October.


Economic Challenge of Sustainability


  * Why do economies grow?
  * What do you understand by emergence?
  * How would your life change if you could only have access to 10% of the oil you use today?


Green Economics, chapter 3


  * What does the second law of thermodynamics have to do with the economy?
  * What do you understand by a bioregion? How might the concept be relevant to economic planning?
  * Can you think of something you use that came directly from nature?
  * Give an example of a closed loop economic process that you are familiar with

  * Do you think women or men are more likely to work in the core economy?
  * Are their things you would do for love that you would never do for money?
  * How do you understand the concepts of a ‘time bank’ and a ‘time dollar’?

·        Do you think it should be possible to own land? What do you make of the indigenous view
that ‘The Earth is our Mother?’

·        What would be the advantages and disadvantages of a land tax, from the point of view of
the government?

·        What do you understand by ‘low-impact living’? Would it be a lifestyle you would choose
for yourself?
